He was the son of a professional flutist, and his father's passion for music inspired him to pursue a career in the field. Beckett began playing the flute at a young age and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Beckett's early education was at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under the tutelage of Marcel Moyse, a renowned French flutist. Moyse's teaching methods were rigorous, and he demanded a high level of technical proficiency from his students. Beckett thrived under Moyse's guidance and quickly became one of his star pupils. After completing his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, Beckett began his professional career as a flutist. He played with several orchestras in London, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Beckett's talent and dedication to his craft quickly earned him a reputation as one of the finest flutists in the country. In 1952, Beckett was invited to join the BBC Symphony Orchestra, where he played as the principal flutist for over 20 years. During his time with the orchestra, Beckett performed in countless concerts and recordings, including several premieres of new works by contemporary composers. One of Beckett's most notable performances was his rendition of Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 1 in G Major, which he performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1962. The performance was widely praised by critics and cemented Beckett's reputation as a master of the flute. In addition to his work with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Beckett was also a sought-after soloist and chamber musician. He performed with some of the most prestigious ensembles in the world, including the London Wind Quintet and the Melos Ensemble. Beckett's dedication to his craft and his contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with several awards and honors throughout his career. In 1964, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to music. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music and a member of the Royal Philharmonic Society. Despite his many accomplishments, Beckett remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life. He continued to perform and teach until his death in 2009 at the age of 87. His legacy as one of the greatest flutists of the 20th century lives on through his recordings and the countless musicians he inspired and mentored throughout his career.More....
