Born on October 16, 1936, in Grodno, Poland, Maksymiuk showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later studied at the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw, where he received a degree in composition and conducting. Maksymiuk began his career as a conductor in 1964 when he was appointed as the conductor of the Polish Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was soon invited to conduct other orchestras in Poland and abroad. In 1970, he was appointed as the principal conductor of the National Philharmonic Orchestra in Warsaw, a position he held for 18 years. During his tenure at the National Philharmonic Orchestra, Maksymiuk conducted numerous concerts and recordings, many of which received critical acclaim. He also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned soloists, including Martha Argerich, Krystian Zimerman, and Nigel Kennedy. In addition to his work with the National Philharmonic Orchestra, Maksymiuk has conducted many other orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He has also served as the principal conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Maksymiuk's repertoire is vast and includes works by many of the great composers, including Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Brahms. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the music of Chopin, a fellow Pole, and has recorded several albums of Chopin's music. Throughout his career, Maksymiuk has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1983, he was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta, one of Poland's highest honors. He has also been awarded the Gold Medal of the City of Warsaw and the Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis. In addition to his work as a conductor, Maksymiuk is also a prolific composer. He has written numerous works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. His compositions have been performed by many orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
