Nicholas Collon is a British conductor and founder of the Aurora Orchestra. He was born in London in 1983 and grew up in a musical family. His father was a professional violinist and his mother was a music teacher. Collon began playing the violin at a young age and later studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Collon's interest in conducting began when he was a teenager. He attended a concert conducted by Sir Simon Rattle and was inspired by the way Rattle communicated with the orchestra. Collon began studying conducting with Sian Edwards and later with Colin Metters at the Royal Academy of Music. In 2004, Collon founded the Aurora Orchestra, a chamber orchestra based in London. Collon has also conducted many other orchestras around the world, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked with many renowned soloists, including pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard and violinist Nicola Benedetti. One of Collon's most notable performances was at the 2012 BBC Proms, where he conducted the Aurora Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. The performance was unique in that the orchestra played the entire symphony from memory, without sheet music. The performance was widely praised and received a standing ovation from the audience. Collon has also received many awards and accolades for his work as a conductor. In 2012, he was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Young Artist Award. In 2016, he was named one of the "30 under 30" by Forbes magazine, which recognizes young leaders in various fields. In 2018, he was awarded the Ditson Conductor's Award, which recognizes conductors who have made significant contributions to the performance of American music. In addition to his work as a conductor, Collon is also a composer. He has written music for the Aurora Orchestra and other ensembles, and his compositions have been performed at venues such as the Royal Festival Hall and the Barbican Centre in London. Collon is known for his innovative approach to classical music, and his ability to connect with audiences of all ages and backgrounds. He is passionate about making classical music accessible to everyone, and often incorporates elements of storytelling and audience participation into his performances. Overall, Nicholas Collon is a talented and innovative conductor who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music.
