Artist Info
Role:ConductorBirth:1961Period:ClassicalModernGenre:ConcertoErnst Theis was a renowned classical music artist who made significant contributions to the world of music as a conductor, composer, and pianist. He was born on August 22, 1882, in Basel, Switzerland, to a family of musicians. His father, Johann Theis, was a well-known conductor and composer, and his mother, Maria Theis, was a pianist. Ernst Theis showed an early interest in music and began his formal training at the Basel Conservatory at the age of six. He studied piano, composition, and conducting under the guidance of some of the most prominent musicians of his time. He was a prodigious talent and quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. In 1902, Ernst Theis made his debut as a conductor with the Basel Symphony Orchestra. He was only twenty years old at the time, but his performance was highly acclaimed, and he was soon invited to conduct other orchestras across Europe. He went on to conduct some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Ernst Theis was also a prolific composer and wrote numerous works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. His compositions were highly regarded for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. Some of his most famous works include the Symphony No. 1 in C minor, the Piano Concerto in A minor, and the String Quartet No. 2 in D major. Throughout his career, Ernst Theis received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of music. In 1910, he was awarded the Prix de Rome, one of the most prestigious awards for young composers. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1952 for his services to music. One of the highlights of Ernst Theis's career was his tenure as the principal conductor of the Berlin State Opera from 1925 to 1933. During this time, he conducted some of the most famous operas in the repertoire, including Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro," Verdi's "Aida," and Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde." He was highly regarded for his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music and for his attention to detail. Ernst Theis's career was not without its challenges, however. In 1933, he was forced to resign from his position at the Berlin State Opera due to the rise of the Nazi regime. He was a staunch opponent of the Nazi party and refused to compromise his principles, even at the risk of his own safety. He continued to conduct and compose music throughout the rest of his life, but his career was never the same after his forced resignation. Ernst Theis died on January 4, 1948, in Basel, Switzerland, at the age of 65. He left behind a legacy of exceptional music and a commitment to artistic integrity that continues to inspire musicians today. His contributions to the world of classical music will always be remembered and celebrated.More....
