Carolin Widmann is a renowned German violinist who has established herself as one of the most versatile and exciting performers of her generation. Born on December 10, 1976, in Munich, Germany, Widmann grew up in a family of musicians. Her father, Jost Widmann, is a composer and her mother, Edith Wiens, is a soprano. Widmann began playing the violin at the age of four and received her first lessons from her mother. Widmann's talent was evident from an early age, and she quickly gained recognition as a prodigy. She made her debut with the Munich Chamber Orchestra at the age of 11 and went on to study at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München with Ana Chumachenco. She later continued her studies with Igor Ozim at the Mozarteum Salzburg and with Michèle Auclair at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. Widmann's career took off in the early 2000s, when she won several prestigious awards and competitions. In 2001, she won the International Joseph Joachim Violin Competition in Hannover, Germany, and in 2002, she was awarded the Credit Suisse Young Artist Award. These awards helped to establish Widmann as a rising star in the classical music world. Since then, Widmann has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. She has also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors, such as Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Christoph von Dohnányi. Widmann's repertoire is diverse and includes works from the Baroque era to contemporary music. She has a particular affinity for the music of J.S. Bach and has recorded his complete solo violin works for ECM Records. Widmann is also known for her interpretations of contemporary music and has premiered works by composers such as Wolfgang Rihm, Salvatore Sciarrino, and Jörg Widmann (her brother). One of Widmann's most notable performances was her debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2006, where she performed the Violin Concerto No. 2 by Béla Bartók. The performance was widely praised, and the Berliner Zeitung wrote, "Widmann's playing was breathtakingly virtuosic, yet always sensitive and nuanced." In addition to her performances as a soloist, Widmann is also an active chamber musician. She has collaborated with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Hagen Quartet, the Belcea Quartet, and the Quatuor Diotima. Widmann has received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In addition to the awards mentioned earlier, she has been awarded the Echo Klassik Award, the Diapason d'Or, and the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. She was also named a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London in 2018. Widmann is known for her commitment to contemporary music and has commissioned and premiered many new works. In 2019, she premiered a new violin concerto by the British composer Rebecca Saunders with the Berlin Philharmonic. The work was commissioned by the orchestra specifically for Widmann. In addition to her performing career, Widmann is also a dedicated teacher. She has taught at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München and the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin. She is currently a professor of violin at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg. In conclusion, Carolin Widmann is a highly accomplished and versatile violinist who has established herself as one of the leading performers of her generation.
