Genre:OperaThe Stuttgart Radio Orchestra is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Stuttgart, Germany. Founded in 1945, the orchestra has established itself as one of the leading orchestras in Europe, known for its exceptional performances and recordings of classical music. The orchestra was founded shortly after the end of World War II, as part of the newly established Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR), a public radio and television broadcaster in the state of Baden-Württemberg. The SDR was keen to establish a professional orchestra that could perform and record classical music for its radio and television programs, and also serve as a cultural ambassador for the region. The first conductor of the orchestra was Hans Müller-Kray, who led the ensemble from 1945 to 1951. He was succeeded by Sergiu Celibidache, a Romanian conductor who had previously worked with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Munich Philharmonic. Celibidache was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his insistence on long rehearsals, which helped to establish the orchestra's reputation for technical excellence and precision. Under Celibidache's leadership, the Stuttgart Radio Orchestra became one of the most sought-after orchestras in Europe, performing at major festivals and concert halls across the continent. The orchestra also made numerous recordings for the SDR, including works by Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, and Wagner. After Celibidache's departure in 1971, the orchestra went through a period of transition, with several different conductors taking the helm. In 1982, the orchestra appointed Sir Neville Marriner as its principal conductor, a position he held until 1989. Marriner was known for his expertise in Baroque and Classical music, and he helped to expand the orchestra's repertoire to include works by Handel, Haydn, and Mozart. During Marriner's tenure, the orchestra also made several notable recordings, including a complete cycle of Mozart's symphonies and a recording of Handel's Messiah. In 1984, the orchestra won a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance for its recording of Bach's Mass in B Minor. After Marriner's departure, the orchestra continued to attract top conductors, including Roger Norrington, who served as principal conductor from 1998 to 2011. Norrington was known for his innovative approach to period performance, and he helped to establish the orchestra's reputation as a leading interpreter of Baroque and Classical music. Under Norrington's leadership, the orchestra made several acclaimed recordings, including a complete cycle of Beethoven's symphonies and a recording of Mozart's Requiem. In 2008, the orchestra won a Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance for its recording of Haydn's Symphonies Nos. 6-8. Today, the Stuttgart Radio Orchestra continues to be one of the leading orchestras in Europe, with a reputation for technical excellence and a commitment to innovative programming. The orchestra is currently led by conductor Cornelius Meister, who was appointed principal conductor in 2018. In recent years, the orchestra has continued to make notable recordings, including a recording of Brahms' Symphony No. 1 and a recording of works by the contemporary composer Jörg Widmann. The orchestra has also collaborated with a wide range of soloists and conductors, including pianist Lang Lang and conductor Gustavo Dudamel.More....
