One of Van Phillips' most significant contributions to music was his work on the BBC's "Music While You Work" program. This program was broadcast during World War II and was designed to boost morale among factory workers. Van Phillips arranged and conducted music for the program, which featured popular songs and light music. The program was hugely popular and helped to lift the spirits of workers during the difficult war years. Van Phillips also composed music for films, including the 1949 film "The Blue Lagoon."
