The orchestra was founded in 1946 by the conductor and composer Kurt Sanderling, who served as its principal conductor until 1960. Since then, the orchestra has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Günther Herbig, Claus Peter Flor, and Michael Sanderling, the son of the orchestra's founder. The Berlin Symphony Orchestra has a long and illustrious history, with a reputation for excellence in both classical and contemporary music.
