Brighton Festival Chorus is a renowned classical music artist that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over 50 years. The choir was founded in 1968 by Laszlo Heltay, a Hungarian conductor who had recently moved to Brighton. Heltay was passionate about choral music and wanted to create a choir that would bring together talented singers from the local community to perform a wide range of classical works. The choir started with just 60 members, but quickly grew in size and reputation. Over the years, Brighton Festival Chorus has become one of the most respected choirs in the UK, known for their powerful and emotive performances. The choir has worked with some of the world's leading conductors and orchestras, and has performed in some of the most prestigious venues in the UK and abroad. One of the highlights of Brighton Festival Chorus's early years was their performance of Verdi's Requiem in 1971. The choir was joined by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and a number of soloists, and the performance was a huge success. This was just the beginning of the choir's long and illustrious career, and they have since gone on to perform many other major works, including Handel's Messiah, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and Mahler's Eighth Symphony. In 1984, Brighton Festival Chorus was invited to perform at the BBC Proms, one of the most prestigious classical music festivals in the world. The choir performed in a concert featuring works by Vaughan Williams, including his Sea Symphony. The performance was a huge success, and helped to cement the choir's reputation as one of the UK's leading choral ensembles. Over the years, Brighton Festival Chorus has won many awards and accolades for their performances. In 1993, the choir won the Gramophone Award for Best Choral Performance for their recording of Britten's War Requiem. This was a major achievement for the choir, and helped to raise their profile even further. In 2002, Brighton Festival Chorus was invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. The choir performed a specially commissioned work by composer John Tavener, which was broadcast to millions of people around the world. This was a huge honour for the choir, and helped to showcase their talents to a global audience. In recent years, Brighton Festival Chorus has continued to go from strength to strength. The choir has performed at a number of major festivals and events, including the BBC Proms, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Brighton Festival. They have also continued to work with some of the world's leading conductors and orchestras, including Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of the choir's most recent highlights was their performance of Mahler's Eighth Symphony at the Royal Albert Hall in 2018. The choir was joined by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and a number of soloists, and the performance was hailed as a triumph. The Guardian described the choir's singing as "thrillingly powerful", and praised their "impressive range and depth of tone". Brighton Festival Chorus has also been involved in a number of community projects over the years. The choir has worked with local schools and community groups to promote choral singing, and has also raised money for a number of charities through their performances.
