Born on August 22, 1953, in Poznań, Poland, Nowak showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano at the age of six. He later went on to study conducting at the Academy of Music in Kraków, where he graduated with honors. Nowak's career as a conductor began in 1978 when he was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Kraków Philharmonic Orchestra. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was soon appointed as the principal conductor of the orchestra. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings, including works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. In 1984, Nowak was appointed as the principal conductor of the Polish Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra in Katowice. During his time with the orchestra, he led them in numerous performances and recordings, including works by Chopin, Mozart, and Stravinsky. He also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including Martha Argerich, Krystian Zimerman, and Maxim Vengerov. Nowak's talent as a conductor was recognized internationally, and he was invited to conduct many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. He also conducted at many of the world's leading music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the BBC Proms. One of the highlights of Nowak's career was his appointment as the principal conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in 1997. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings, including works by Mahler, Shostakovich, and Sibelius. He also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including Nigel Kennedy, Joshua Bell, and Yo-Yo Ma. Nowak's talent as a conductor was recognized with many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1991, he was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta, one of Poland's highest honors. He was also awarded the Medal for Merit to Culture by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in 2005.
