Born on August 22, 1947, in Amsterdam, Guittart showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of six. However, he later switched to the viola, which became his primary instrument. Guittart received his formal music education at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned violist and pedagogue, Nobuko Imai. He later continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where he received his diploma in viola performance. In 1974, Guittart joined the Schoenberg Quartet, a renowned Dutch string quartet that specialized in contemporary music. The quartet gained international recognition for their innovative interpretations of works by composers such as Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, and Anton Webern. Guittart remained a member of the quartet until 2009, during which time they performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. In addition to his work with the Schoenberg Quartet, Guittart has also performed as a soloist and chamber musician with various orchestras and ensembles. He has collaborated with renowned musicians such as pianist Ronald Brautigam, cellist Anner Bylsma, and violinist Isabelle van Keulen, among others. Guittart's conducting career began in the early 1990s when he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Netherlands Youth String Orchestra.
