The orchestra was founded in 1923 as the first radio orchestra in Germany, and has since become one of the most respected and celebrated orchestras in the world. The orchestra's early years were marked by a series of notable conductors, including Hermann Abendroth, who led the ensemble from 1932 to 1945. During this time, the orchestra gained a reputation for its exceptional performances of contemporary music, and became known for its collaborations with leading composers of the day.
