He quickly gained a reputation for his exceptional skills as an arranger and was soon in high demand. In 1940, he joined the Royal Air Force and served as a musician in the RAF Central Band. During his time in the RAF, Black continued to hone his skills as a conductor and arranger, and he also composed several pieces of music. After the war, Black returned to his career as a musician and quickly established himself as one of the leading conductors and arrangers in the UK. He worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and Judy Garland. He also composed music for films, television shows, and radio programs. One of Black's most significant achievements was his work as the conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra. He held this position from 1952 to 1960 and helped to establish the orchestra as one of the leading ensembles in the UK.
