Anton Kuerti was a renowned Canadian classical pianist, composer, and conductor. He was born on July 21, 1938, in Vienna, Austria, to a family of musicians. His father, Rudolf Kuerti, was a composer and conductor, and his mother, Wanda Kuerti, was a pianist. Anton Kuerti showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. In 1948, the Kuerti family moved to the United States, where Anton continued his musical education. He studied with renowned pianists such as Arthur Loesser and Mieczyslaw Horszowski. In 1952, at the age of 14, Kuerti made his debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, playing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1. Kuerti continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with Rosina Lhévinne. He also studied composition with Vincent Persichetti and conducting with Jean Morel. In 1955, Kuerti won the Leventritt Competition, which launched his career as a concert pianist. Kuerti's career as a concert pianist took him all over the world. He performed with major orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He also performed at major music festivals such as the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. Kuerti was known for his interpretations of Beethoven's piano music. He recorded all of Beethoven's piano sonatas, which won critical acclaim. He also recorded the complete piano music of Schumann, Brahms, and Chopin. In addition to his career as a pianist, Kuerti was also a composer. He wrote music for piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. His compositions were performed by major orchestras such as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Kuerti was also a respected conductor. He conducted major orchestras such as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. He was known for his interpretations of the music of Beethoven, Mozart, and Brahms. Kuerti was the recipient of many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1975, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada, and in 2008, he was promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada. He was also awarded the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in Classical Music in 2005. Kuerti was a beloved figure in the Canadian classical music community. He was known for his generosity and his dedication to music education. He taught at the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of Music, where he mentored many young musicians. Kuerti continued to perform and record music well into his 70s. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2011, which forced him to retire from performing. He passed away on March 13, 2020, at the age of 81. Anton Kuerti was a gifted musician who left a lasting impact on the classical music world.
