Born on December 20, 1948, in Atami, Japan, Uchida began playing the piano at the age of three. Her parents were both amateur musicians, and they recognized her talent early on. Uchida's mother was her first piano teacher, and she later studied with Maria Curcio, a student of Artur Schnabel. Uchida's talent was evident from a young age, and she won her first competition at the age of 12. She went on to study at the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, where she won several awards and honed her skills as a pianist. In 1969, Uchida moved to Vienna to study with Richard Hauser at the Vienna Academy of Music. She later studied with Wilhelm Kempff in Germany and with Maria João Pires in Portugal. Uchida's career as a concert pianist began in the 1970s, and she quickly gained a reputation as a talented and insightful performer. She made her debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1975, and she has since performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. Uchida is particularly known for her interpretations of Mozart's piano concertos, and she has recorded all of them with the English Chamber Orchestra. In addition to her work as a soloist, Uchida is also an accomplished chamber musician. She has collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians, including the cellist Mischa Maisky and the violinist Mark Steinberg. Uchida is a regular performer at the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont, where she has worked with many young musicians. Uchida has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1989, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her services to music, and in 2001, she was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art. She has also received several Grammy Awards for her recordings, including Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (Without Orchestra) for her recording of Schubert's piano sonatas. One of Uchida's most notable achievements was her tenure as the Artistic Director of the Marlboro Music Festival from 1999 to 2013. During her time there, she worked to maintain the festival's tradition of excellence while also introducing new ideas and programming.
