Born on April 19, 1947, in the Bronx, New York, Perahia began playing the piano at the age of four, and by the time he was a teenager, he had already won several competitions and performed with the New York Philharmonic. Perahia studied at the Mannes School of Music in New York and later at the Juilliard School, where he was a student of the legendary pianist and teacher Mieczysław Horszowski. He also studied with the pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy, who became a mentor and friend. In 1972, Perahia won the Leeds International Piano Competition, which launched his career as a soloist. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented and expressive pianists of his generation, and he began performing with major orchestras around the world. Perahia's repertoire is wide-ranging, but he is particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Bach. He has recorded all of Bach's keyboard concertos and many of his solo works, including the Goldberg Variations, the Partitas, and the French Suites. His recordings of Bach's music have been praised for their clarity, sensitivity, and technical brilliance. Perahia has also recorded extensively the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schumann, as well as the music of Chopin, Brahms, and Liszt. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Bernard Haitink, and Sir Simon Rattle. In addition to his work as a soloist, Perahia is also a respected conductor. He has led many of the world's top orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He is known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to bring out the best in the musicians he works with. Perahia has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1984, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. He has also been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Royal Philharmonic Society's Gold Medal. Despite his success, Perahia has faced several challenges in his career. In the 1990s, he was forced to take a break from performing due to a hand injury. He underwent several surgeries and intensive physical therapy, and eventually returned to the stage. He has also struggled with stage fright, which he has spoken openly about in interviews. Despite these challenges, Perahia has continued to perform and record at the highest level. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of his generation, and his recordings and performances continue to inspire and delight audiences around the world.More....
