Born in 1969 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Plutz grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1991 and then went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at Yale University, where he studied with renowned organist Thomas Murray.
