Philippe Sly is a Canadian bass-baritone who has made a name for himself in the world of classical music. Born on November 28, 1984, in Ottawa, Canada, Sly grew up in a musical family. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer. Sly began singing at a young age and quickly developed a passion for classical music. Sly attended the University of Ottawa, where he studied with renowned Canadian bass-baritone, Robert Savoie. He later went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he worked with Marlena Malas and Mikael Eliasen. During his time at Curtis, Sly won the school's prestigious Marian Anderson Award, which is given to a student who shows exceptional promise in the field of opera. Sly's career began to take off in 2012 when he won first prize at the Montreal International Musical Competition. This win led to a number of high-profile performances, including a recital at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and a performance with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. In 2013, Sly made his European debut at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in France, where he performed the role of Leporello in Mozart's Don Giovanni. This performance was widely praised, and Sly was hailed as a rising star in the world of opera. Since then, Sly has performed at some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera. He has also worked with some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Sir Simon Rattle, and Daniel Barenboim. One of Sly's most notable performances was his portrayal of Don Giovanni in a production by the Canadian Opera Company in 2015. This performance was widely praised, with critics hailing Sly's "rich, dark voice" and "commanding stage presence." Sly has also made a name for himself as a recitalist, performing in venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Wigmore Hall in London. He has a particular affinity for the music of Schubert, and has recorded a number of the composer's lieder. In addition to his performances, Sly is also a passionate advocate for music education. He has worked with a number of organizations to bring music education to underserved communities, and has served as a mentor to young singers. Sly has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In addition to his win at the Montreal International Musical Competition, he has also been awarded the Virginia Parker Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Prix Relève from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and the Prix Opus for Performer of the Year. Despite his success, Sly remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to work tirelessly to improve his singing and to bring the beauty of classical music to audiences around the world.
