Born in Belgium in 1966, Michiels showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He went on to study at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he received his diploma in piano performance with distinction. Michiels' talent was quickly recognized, and he began performing in concerts and competitions throughout Europe. In 1988, he won the prestigious International Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, which launched his career as a soloist. He has since performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Michiels is known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he performs. He has a particular affinity for the works of Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms, and has recorded several albums of their music. His recordings have received critical acclaim and have won numerous awards, including the Diapason d'Or and the Gramophone Award. In addition to his work as a soloist, Michiels is also a respected chamber musician and collaborator. He has performed with many of the world's leading musicians, including violinist Gidon Kremer and cellist Mischa Maisky. He is a founding member of the Trio Portici, which has been praised for its innovative programming and dynamic performances. Michiels is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has taught at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, and has given masterclasses throughout Europe and Asia.
