Nikita Magaloff was a renowned classical pianist who was born on February 12, 1912, in St. Petersburg, Russia. He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known conductor. Magaloff began playing the piano at a young age and showed exceptional talent. He received his first piano lessons from his mother, who was also a pianist. In 1920, Magaloff's family moved to Switzerland, where he continued his piano studies with renowned pianist and teacher, Egon Petri. Petri recognized Magaloff's talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Magaloff made his debut performance at the age of 14, playing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra. Magaloff continued his studies with Petri and later with Alfred Cortot in Paris. He also studied composition with Paul Hindemith and conducting with Felix Weingartner. Magaloff's dedication to his craft paid off, and he quickly gained recognition as a talented pianist. In 1937, Magaloff won the prestigious Geneva International Music Competition, which launched his international career. He went on to perform in major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Magaloff was known for his interpretations of the works of Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. He was particularly renowned for his performances of Chopin's music, and he recorded the complete works of Chopin for Deutsche Grammophon in the 1960s. Magaloff was also a prolific recording artist, and he recorded for several major record labels, including Deutsche Grammophon, Philips, and EMI. His recordings of Chopin's music are considered some of the best ever made, and they continue to be popular with classical music enthusiasts today. In addition to his solo performances, Magaloff was also a sought-after chamber musician. He frequently performed with other renowned musicians, including violinist Yehudi Menuhin and cellist Pablo Casals.
