Kontra Quartet is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2001 in Budapest, Hungary. The quartet is made up of four talented musicians who are passionate about chamber music and have dedicated their lives to perfecting their craft. The members of the quartet are violinists Judit Szabó and András Szabó, violist Gábor Homoki, and cellist Ákos Takács. The quartet's founding members, Judit Szabó and Gábor Homoki, met while studying at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. They quickly discovered a shared love for chamber music and decided to form a quartet. They were soon joined by András Szabó and Ákos Takács, and the Kontra Quartet was born. The quartet's name, Kontra, is a Hungarian word that means "against" or "opposite." The name reflects the quartet's desire to challenge traditional interpretations of classical music and to bring a fresh perspective to their performances. Since its founding, the Kontra Quartet has become one of the most respected chamber music ensembles in Hungary and has gained international recognition for its exceptional performances. The quartet has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of the highlights of the Kontra Quartet's career was their performance at the 2006 Edinburgh International Festival. The quartet received rave reviews for their performance of Bartók's String Quartet No. 5, which was described as "mesmerizing" and "spellbinding." The quartet's performance was so well-received that they were invited back to the festival the following year. In addition to their performances, the Kontra Quartet has also received numerous awards and accolades for their recordings. Their recording of Bartók's String Quartets Nos. 1-6 was named "Recording of the Month" by Gramophone magazine in 2011. The quartet's recording of Haydn's String Quartets Op. 20 was also highly praised and received a "Chamber Music Choice" award from BBC Music Magazine. The Kontra Quartet is known for their innovative programming, which often includes lesser-known works by composers such as György Ligeti and Béla Bartók. The quartet is also committed to promoting the works of contemporary composers and has premiered works by Hungarian composers such as Gyula Fekete and Péter Tornyai. In addition to their performances and recordings, the Kontra Quartet is also dedicated to music education. The quartet regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for young musicians and has served as artists-in-residence at several universities and music schools. The Kontra Quartet's commitment to excellence and their passion for chamber music has made them one of the most respected ensembles in the world. Their innovative programming, exceptional performances, and dedication to music education have earned them a place among the great chamber music ensembles of our time.
