The American Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is a classical music ensemble based in New York City. Founded in 1962 by conductor Leopold Stokowski, the ASO has become one of the most respected and innovative orchestras in the United States. Leopold Stokowski, a legendary conductor who had previously led the Philadelphia Orchestra and the NBC Symphony Orchestra, founded the ASO with the goal of creating a new kind of orchestra that would focus on contemporary music and neglected works from the past. Stokowski believed that classical music should be accessible to everyone, and he wanted to create an orchestra that would break down the barriers between performers and audiences. The ASO's early years were marked by a series of groundbreaking performances and recordings. In 1965, the orchestra became the first American ensemble to perform the complete cycle of Mahler's symphonies. The ASO also recorded a number of important works by contemporary composers, including Charles Ives, Elliott Carter, and George Perle. After Stokowski's retirement in 1972, the ASO continued to thrive under the leadership of a series of distinguished conductors. In 1985, the orchestra appointed Catherine Comet as its music director, making her the first woman to lead a major American orchestra. Under Comet's leadership, the ASO continued to explore new repertoire and to collaborate with a wide range of artists and organizations. One of the ASO's most notable collaborations was with the New York City Ballet, with whom the orchestra performed a series of ballets by George Balanchine. The ASO also worked closely with the Brooklyn Academy of Music, performing a number of operas and other works in collaboration with the academy's theater and dance companies. In addition to its collaborations with other organizations, the ASO has also been recognized for its own performances and recordings. The orchestra has won numerous awards, including several Grammy Awards for its recordings of works by Ives, Carter, and other composers. The ASO has also been praised for its innovative programming, which has included performances of rarely heard works by composers such as Carl Nielsen, Gustav Mahler, and Anton Bruckner. Today, the ASO continues to be a vital force in the world of classical music. The orchestra is led by music director Leon Botstein, who has been with the ASO since 1992. Under Botstein's leadership, the ASO has continued to explore new repertoire and to collaborate with a wide range of artists and organizations. In recent years, the ASO has also become known for its innovative use of technology. The orchestra has launched a number of digital initiatives, including a series of online concerts and a mobile app that allows audiences to interact with the orchestra in real time. Despite its many achievements, the ASO remains committed to its founding mission of making classical music accessible to everyone. The orchestra continues to perform in a wide range of venues, from concert halls to schools and community centers, and it remains dedicated to bringing the joy of classical music to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
