Die Verschworenen, also known as The Conspirators, is an opera composed by Franz Schubert in 1823. The libretto was written by Ignaz Franz Castelli and is based on the French play Les deux comperes by Charles-Simon Favart. The opera premiered on August 1, 1861, at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, Austria. The plot of Die Verschworenen revolves around two young men, Count Henriquez and his friend Florindo, who are in love with the same woman, Marzelline. Marzelline's father, the wealthy merchant Jeronimo, disapproves of Count Henriquez and wants his daughter to marry Florindo instead. The two young men, along with a group of conspirators, hatch a plan to kidnap Marzelline and force Jeronimo to consent to her marriage to Count Henriquez. The opera is divided into three acts and features a number of musical movements, including arias, duets, and ensemble pieces. Schubert's music is characterized by its lyricism and emotional depth, with the composer using the music to convey the characters' inner thoughts and feelings. One of the most notable characteristics of Die Verschworenen is its use of spoken dialogue instead of recitative. This was a departure from the traditional operatic style of the time and was seen as a nod to the popular Singspiel genre. The use of spoken dialogue also allowed for a more naturalistic portrayal of the characters and their relationships. Despite its innovative approach, Die Verschworenen was not a commercial success and was only performed a handful of times during Schubert's lifetime. However, the opera has since been recognized as an important work in the composer's oeuvre and has been revived in modern productions.
