Born on February 9, 1921, in Chicago, Illinois, Barab showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of nine. He went on to study at the University of Chicago and the Juilliard School of Music, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1942. After completing his studies, Barab began his career as a cellist, performing with various orchestras and ensembles. In 1950, Barab's opera, "Chanticleer," premiered at the New York City Opera, marking the beginning of his successful career as a composer. He was also known for his ability to blend different musical styles, creating works that were both innovative and accessible. He served as the music director of the New York City Opera's touring company from 1952 to 1954 and later conducted for the New York City Ballet.
