Born on 22nd June 1953 in Melbourne, Australia, Cook showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of eight. He was a student at the Victorian College of the Arts, where he studied under the tutelage of Nelson Cooke, a renowned cellist. Cook's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition as a promising young musician. In 1972, he won the prestigious ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Award, which helped to launch his career. He went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he was awarded the Tagore Gold Medal for outstanding achievement. Cook's career as a professional musician began in earnest in the late 1970s when he joined the London Symphony Orchestra. He quickly established himself as a talented cellist, and his performances were highly acclaimed. In 1980, he was appointed principal cellist of the orchestra, a position he held for over a decade.
