Kurt Redel was a German conductor, flutist, and composer who was born on July 22, 1918, in Munich, Germany. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Redel began playing the flute at a young age and showed great talent for the instrument. He studied at the Munich Conservatory and later at the Paris Conservatory, where he studied with Marcel Moyse, one of the most renowned flute teachers of the time. After completing his studies, Redel began his career as a flutist, performing with various orchestras in Germany and France. He also began conducting and composing music. In 1950, he founded the Munich Chamber Orchestra, which he conducted for many years. The orchestra became known for its performances of Baroque and Classical music, and Redel's interpretations of these works were highly regarded. Redel's career as a conductor and flutist took him all over the world. He performed with many of the leading orchestras of the time, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also conducted many opera productions, including Mozart's "The Magic Flute" and Gluck's "Orfeo ed Euridice." Redel was particularly known for his performances of Baroque music, and he was one of the pioneers of the Baroque revival in the mid-20th century. He was a champion of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, and he conducted many performances of Bach's works, including the Brandenburg Concertos and the Mass in B Minor. He also recorded many of Bach's works, including the complete set of Brandenburg Concertos. In addition to his work as a conductor and flutist, Redel was also a composer. He wrote many works for the flute, including sonatas, concertos, and chamber music. His compositions were influenced by the Baroque and Classical styles, and he often incorporated elements of these styles into his works. Redel received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1962, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his contributions to music. He was also awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit and the French Legion of Honor. In 1988, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Redel continued to perform and conduct well into his later years. He died on March 8, 2013, at the age of 94.
