The Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in the city of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The orchestra was founded in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II, and has since become one of the most renowned orchestras in Bulgaria and the Balkans. The founding of the Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra was a result of the post-war cultural revival in Bulgaria. The city of Plovdiv, which had a rich musical tradition dating back to the 19th century, was chosen as the location for the new orchestra. The first conductor of the orchestra was Dobrin Petkov, a prominent Bulgarian composer and conductor. Over the years, the Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra has had many distinguished conductors, including Emil Tabakov, Nayden Todorov, and Rossen Milanov. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, such as violinist Maxim Vengerov, pianist Martha Argerich, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra has a core of around 80 musicians, who are all highly trained and skilled in their respective instruments. The orchestra performs a wide range of classical music, from Baroque to contemporary, and has a particular focus on Bulgarian and Balkan composers. One of the highlights of the Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada. The orchestra played a piece by Bulgarian composer Petko Staynov, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. The Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra has also won numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2006, the orchestra was awarded the "Crystal Lyre" award by the Union of Bulgarian Musicians and Dancers, which is the highest honor in Bulgarian music. The orchestra has also won several international competitions, including the "Grand Prix" at the International Festival of Symphonic Music in Varna, Bulgaria. In addition to its regular concert schedule, the Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra is also involved in a number of educational and outreach programs. The orchestra runs a music school for young musicians, and also performs concerts in schools and community centers throughout Bulgaria. Overall, the Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra is a highly respected and accomplished classical music ensemble, with a rich history and a bright future. The orchestra's commitment to promoting Bulgarian and Balkan composers, as well as its dedication to education and outreach, make it a valuable cultural institution in Bulgaria and beyond.
