United KingdomBirth:April 22, 1912 in Higher Walton, Lancashire, EnglandDeath:October 8, 1953 in London, EnglandGenre:ChoralVocalKathleen Ferrier was a British contralto who rose to fame in the mid-20th century. She was born on April 22, 1912, in Lancashire, England, to a family of modest means. Her father was a village schoolmaster, and her mother was a talented amateur singer. Ferrier inherited her mother's musical talent and began singing in church choirs at a young age. Ferrier's formal musical education began when she won a scholarship to study at the Royal Manchester College of Music in 1934. She studied under the renowned vocal coach Dr. Arthur Cranmer and quickly established herself as a talented singer. She won several prizes and awards during her time at the college, including the prestigious Hullah Prize for singing. After completing her studies, Ferrier began performing professionally in concerts and recitals. She quickly gained a reputation as a gifted singer with a rich, warm voice and a natural stage presence. She was particularly renowned for her interpretations of the works of Gustav Mahler, whose music she had discovered while studying at the college. Ferrier's breakthrough came in 1943 when she was invited to perform at the prestigious Glyndebourne Festival Opera. She sang the role of Lucretia in Benjamin Britten's opera "The Rape of Lucretia" to critical acclaim. This performance launched her career as an opera singer, and she went on to perform in many of the world's leading opera houses, including Covent Garden, La Scala, and the Metropolitan Opera. Ferrier's success as an opera singer was matched by her success as a concert and recital performer. She was in high demand as a soloist with orchestras and choral societies, and she gave many memorable recitals accompanied by the pianist Bruno Walter. One of Ferrier's most famous performances was her rendition of Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde" with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1947. This performance was recorded and has since become a classic of the classical music repertoire. Ferrier's interpretation of the work is widely regarded as one of the greatest ever recorded. Ferrier's career was tragically cut short when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1951. She underwent surgery and chemotherapy but was unable to continue performing at the same level as before. Despite her illness, she continued to perform whenever she could, and her final performance was in September 1953 at the Edinburgh Festival. Ferrier's legacy as a singer has endured long after her death. Her recordings continue to be popular with classical music lovers, and her interpretations of Mahler's music are still regarded as some of the finest ever recorded. She has been the subject of several biographies and documentaries, and her life and career continue to inspire new generations of singers. In recognition of her contributions to classical music, Ferrier was awarded several honors during her lifetime. She was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1948 and was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society in 1953. After her death, the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to support young singers in their studies. In conclusion, Kathleen Ferrier was a remarkable singer whose talent and dedication to her craft made her one of the most beloved classical music artists of the 20th century. Her legacy continues to inspire and influence singers and music lovers around the world.More....
