Artist Info
Charles Reid was born on May 22, 1950, in New York City. He grew up in a musical family, with his mother being a pianist and his father a singer. Reid began singing at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City, where he studied voice and piano. After high school, Reid attended the Juilliard School, where he studied with renowned vocal coach, Margaret Harshaw. He also studied with other notable teachers, including Licia Albanese and Eleanor Steber. Reid's training at Juilliard was rigorous, and he spent many hours each day practicing and perfecting his craft. In 1974, Reid made his professional debut with the New York City Opera, singing the role of the Messenger in Richard Strauss's "Elektra." He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and dynamic stage presence. Over the next few years, Reid performed with several other opera companies, including the San Francisco Opera, the Houston Grand Opera, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. In 1980, Reid made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, singing the role of the Steersman in Wagner's "The Flying Dutchman." This was a major milestone in his career, and he went on to perform many other roles at the Met, including Tamino in Mozart's "The Magic Flute," Don Ottavio in Mozart's "Don Giovanni," and the Duke in Verdi's "Rigoletto." Throughout his career, Reid was known for his versatility as a singer. He was equally comfortable performing in operas, oratorios, and recitals. He had a particular affinity for the music of Mozart, and his performances of Mozart's works were highly praised by critics and audiences alike. In addition to his work as a performer, Reid was also a respected teacher. He taught at several institutions, including the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Curtis Institute of Music. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in the music industry. Reid received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1984, he was awarded the Richard Tucker Award, which is given annually to an outstanding American opera singer. He was also a recipient of the National Opera Institute's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Despite his success, Reid faced several challenges throughout his career. He struggled with vocal health issues, including nodules on his vocal cords, which required surgery. He also faced discrimination as a black opera singer in a predominantly white industry. However, he persevered and continued to perform at the highest level. In 1999, Reid retired from performing due to health issues. He continued to teach and mentor young singers until his death on March 26, 2019, at the age of 68. Charles Reid was a trailblazer in the world of classical music. He broke down barriers and paved the way for future generations of black opera singers. His powerful voice and dynamic stage presence will be remembered for years to come, and his legacy as a performer and teacher will continue to inspire young musicians around the world.More....
