Der Ring des Nibelungen, also known as The Ring Cycle, is a four-opera cycle composed by Richard Wagner between 1848 and 1874. The cycle consists of Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung, and tells the story of a cursed ring that brings power and destruction to those who possess it. The plot of the cycle is based on Norse mythology and follows the struggles of gods, heroes, and mortals as they seek to gain control of the ring. The story begins with Das Rheingold, in which the dwarf Alberich steals the gold from the Rhine River and forges it into a ring that gives him ultimate power. The gods, led by Wotan, seek to obtain the ring for themselves, but are ultimately thwarted by Alberich's curse. In Die Walküre, the second opera, the story focuses on the love between the hero Siegmund and his twin sister Sieglinde, who are ultimately separated by fate. The Valkyrie Brünnhilde, who has defied Wotan's orders to protect Siegmund, is punished and put to sleep on a mountaintop. Siegfried, the third opera, follows the adventures of the eponymous hero as he seeks to slay the dragon Fafner and claim the ring for himself. He falls in love with Brünnhilde, who he awakens from her sleep, but their love is ultimately doomed. The final opera, Götterdämmerung, sees the downfall of the gods and the destruction of the world. The ring is returned to the Rhine River, and the cycle ends with the world being reborn. The Ring Cycle is known for its complex and intricate music, which features leitmotifs that represent characters, themes, and ideas. Wagner also pioneered the use of the orchestra as a storytelling device, with the music often conveying the emotions and actions of the characters. The cycle was first performed in its entirety at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus in 1876, and has since become one of the most famous and influential works in the operatic repertoire. Its themes of power, love, and redemption continue to resonate with audiences today.
