Birth:1962 in Encino, CAGenre:ChamberPaul Neubauer is a renowned violist and one of the most sought-after chamber musicians of his generation. Born on October 26, 1960, in Los Angeles, California, Neubauer grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Harold Neubauer, was a violinist and conductor, and his mother, Lillian Fuchs, was a violist and composer. Neubauer's aunt, Joseph Fuchs, was also a renowned violinist and teacher. Neubauer began playing the violin at the age of four, but switched to the viola at the age of nine. He studied with his mother and later with William Primrose, one of the greatest violists of the 20th century. Neubauer also studied at the Juilliard School with Lillian Fuchs, his mother, and with Samuel Rhodes. In 1980, Neubauer won the prestigious Naumburg Viola Competition, which launched his career as a soloist. He made his debut with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Zubin Mehta, and has since performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Neubauer is also a dedicated chamber musician and has collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Pinchas Zukerman. He has been a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 1992 and has performed at major festivals around the world, including the Marlboro Music Festival, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, and the Verbier Festival. In addition to his performing career, Neubauer is also a respected teacher and has taught at the Juilliard School, the Mannes College of Music, and the New England Conservatory. He is currently on the faculty of the Juilliard School and the Mannes School of Music. Neubauer has recorded extensively and has received critical acclaim for his recordings of the viola repertoire. His recording of the complete works for viola and piano by Ernest Bloch was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2001. He has also recorded the complete works for viola and orchestra by William Walton and Paul Hindemith. Neubauer has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In addition to the Naumburg Viola Competition, he has won the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, the William Primrose International Viola Competition, and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. He was also awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1989. Neubauer is known for his warm, rich tone and his expressive playing. He is a passionate advocate for the viola and has commissioned many new works for the instrument.
