He was born on June 26, 1902, in Corseaux, Switzerland, to a family of musicians. His father was a composer and his mother was a singer, and they both encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Cuénod began his musical training at a young age, studying piano and singing with his mother. He later studied at the Geneva Conservatory, where he focused on voice and composition. After completing his studies, he began performing in concerts and operas throughout Europe. One of Cuénod's early breakthroughs came in 1928, when he was invited to perform in a production of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" at the Salzburg Festival. His performance was widely praised, and he soon became known for his interpretations of Mozart's music. Cuénod continued to perform in operas and concerts throughout Europe in the 1930s and 1940s, earning critical acclaim for his performances of works by composers such as Bach, Handel, and Schubert. He also became known for his collaborations with contemporary composers, including Igor Stravinsky and Francis Poulenc. In 1950, Cuénod made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, performing in a production of Mozart's "The Magic Flute." He went on to perform in several other productions at the Met, including "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Don Giovanni." Cuénod's career continued to flourish in the 1950s and 1960s, as he performed in operas and concerts throughout the world. He also began teaching voice at the Geneva Conservatory, where he mentored several generations of young singers. One of Cuénod's most notable achievements came in 1972, when he was awarded the Légion d'honneur, one of France's highest honors. He was also awarded the Swiss Grand Prix for Music in 1978. Cuénod continued to perform and teach well into his 90s, and he remained an influential figure in the world of classical music until his death on December 6, 2010, at the age of 108. Throughout his career, Cuénod was known for his clear, pure voice and his impeccable technique. He was also known for his ability to bring a sense of humor and playfulness to his performances, which endeared him to audiences around the world. Cuénod's legacy continues to be felt in the world of classical music, as his recordings and performances continue to inspire new generations of singers and musicians. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest tenors of the 20th century, and as a true ambassador of the art of singing.More....
