She was the daughter of a Welsh father and an English mother. Sinclair grew up in a musical family, and her parents encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She began singing in church choirs at a young age and later studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Sinclair made her professional debut in 1947 with the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, where she performed the role of the Third Lady in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." She quickly gained recognition for her powerful voice and dramatic stage presence. In 1951, she made her debut at the Royal Opera House in London, where she performed the role of Erda in Wagner's "Das Rheingold." Throughout her career, Sinclair performed in many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Paris Opera, and the Vienna State Opera. She was particularly renowned for her performances in the works of Wagner, Verdi, and Handel. One of Sinclair's most notable performances was in the 1955 production of Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" at the Bayreuth Festival in Germany. She played the role of Brangäne, a confidante of the character Isolde. Sinclair's performance was widely praised for its emotional depth and vocal power. Sinclair also had a successful career as a concert singer, performing with many of the world's leading orchestras. She was particularly known for her performances of Handel's oratorios, including "Messiah" and "Israel in Egypt." In addition to her performances, Sinclair was also a respected teacher of singing. She taught at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where she mentored many young singers who went on to have successful careers in the opera world. Throughout her career, Sinclair received many awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1961, she was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her services to music. She was also awarded the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977 and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002. Sinclair retired from performing in the 1980s but continued to be involved in the music world as a teacher and mentor. She passed away on June 16, 2002, at the age of 77. Her legacy as one of the greatest contraltos of the 20th century lives on through her recordings and the many singers she inspired and taught.More....
