Jac van Steen is a renowned Dutch conductor who has made a significant impact on the classical music scene. Born on September 9, 1956, in Eindhoven, Netherlands, van Steen grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a conductor, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, van Steen showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Van Steen's musical education began at the Brabant Conservatory in Tilburg, where he studied piano and conducting. He later continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where he studied with renowned conductors such as Hans Vonk and Willem van Otterloo. After completing his studies, van Steen began his career as a conductor, working with various orchestras in the Netherlands. In 1985, van Steen was appointed as the principal conductor of the Nijmegen Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for six years. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings, earning critical acclaim for his interpretations of works by composers such as Mahler, Bruckner, and Shostakovich. In 1992, van Steen was appointed as the principal conductor of the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held for ten years. During his time with the orchestra, he led them in numerous performances and recordings, including a highly acclaimed recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 6. Van Steen's reputation as a conductor continued to grow, and he was soon in demand as a guest conductor with orchestras around the world. He has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Van Steen has also been a regular guest conductor with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, with whom he has recorded several critically acclaimed albums. In 2005, he was appointed as the orchestra's principal guest conductor, a position he held until 2012. Van Steen's repertoire is wide-ranging, and he has conducted works by composers from Bach to contemporary composers such as John Adams and Magnus Lindberg. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Mahler, Bruckner, and Shostakovich. Van Steen has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1996, he was awarded the Dutch Music Prize, the highest honor for a musician in the Netherlands. In 2005, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau, a prestigious honor in the Netherlands. Van Steen has also been recognized for his work in promoting contemporary music. In 2007, he was awarded the Johan Wagenaar Prize for his contributions to contemporary Dutch music. In addition to his work as a conductor, van Steen is also a respected teacher and mentor. He has taught conducting at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and the Conservatory of Amsterdam, and has mentored many young conductors throughout his career. Van Steen continues to be an active conductor, and his schedule is filled with performances and recordings with orchestras around the world.
