The Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Nuremberg, Germany. The orchestra was founded in 1946, shortly after the end of World War II, by a group of musicians who were determined to revive the city's cultural life. The founding members included musicians who had previously played in the Nuremberg Opera Orchestra, which had been disbanded during the war. The orchestra's first conductor was Hermann Kutzschbach, who led the ensemble until 1951. Kutzschbach was succeeded by Hans Gierster, who served as the orchestra's conductor until 1978. During Gierster's tenure, the orchestra established itself as one of the leading ensembles in Germany, performing regularly in major concert halls and festivals throughout the country. In 1978, the orchestra appointed its current conductor, Alexander Shelley. Shelley, who was born in London, England, had previously served as an assistant conductor with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Under Shelley's leadership, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra has continued to build on its reputation as one of Germany's premier ensembles. The orchestra's main members include approximately 100 musicians, including string players, woodwind players, brass players, and percussionists. Many of the orchestra's members are German, but the ensemble also includes musicians from other countries, including Austria, Switzerland, and the United States. Over the years, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra has performed a wide range of classical repertoire, including works by Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. The orchestra has also commissioned and premiered new works by contemporary composers, including Jörg Widmann and Matthias Pintscher. One of the orchestra's most notable performances took place in 1985, when it performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at the Berlin Wall. The concert, which was broadcast live on television, was seen as a symbol of hope and unity during a time of political division in Germany. The Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2009, the orchestra was awarded the Bavarian Culture Prize, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the arts in Bavaria. The orchestra has also been praised for its recordings, including a 2015 recording of works by Richard Strauss that was named "Recording of the Month" by Gramophone magazine. In addition to its regular concert schedule, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra is also involved in a number of educational and outreach programs. The orchestra's "Klassik für Kids" program, for example, introduces young audiences to classical music through interactive concerts and workshops. Overall, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra has established itself as one of Germany's most respected and innovative classical music ensembles. With its commitment to both traditional repertoire and new music, as well as its dedication to education and outreach, the orchestra is sure to continue to inspire and delight audiences for years to come.
