He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Treptow showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He was a prodigious talent and quickly developed a reputation as a gifted musician. Treptow's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with some of the best teachers in Berlin and quickly developed a reputation as a prodigious talent. He was soon performing in public and winning awards for his performances. In 1965, Treptow was accepted into the prestigious Berlin University of the Arts, where he studied under the renowned pianist and teacher, Karl-Heinz Kämmerling. Kämmerling recognized Treptow's talent and took him under his wing, helping him to develop his skills and refine his technique. Treptow's talent soon caught the attention of the music world, and he began performing in some of the most prestigious concert halls in Europe. He made his debut at the Berlin Philharmonic in 1968, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5. The performance was a resounding success, and Treptow was hailed as a rising star in the classical music world. Over the next few years, Treptow continued to perform in some of the most prestigious concert halls in Europe, including the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He also began recording his performances, and his recordings quickly became bestsellers. In 1972, Treptow won the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, which cemented his reputation as one of the world's greatest pianists. Treptow's performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 was a tour de force, and he was awarded the top prize by the judges. Following his victory at the Tchaikovsky Competition, Treptow's career continued to soar.
