He was born on November 17, 1957, in Toronto, Canada. From a young age, Quarrington showed a keen interest in music, and he began playing the double bass at the age of 16. He then continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied under the tutelage of Roger Scott. Quarrington's career as a professional musician began in 1981 when he joined the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as their principal double bassist. He held this position for 18 years, during which time he established himself as one of the leading double bassists in the world. In addition to his work with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Quarrington has also performed with many other orchestras, including the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of Quarrington's career was his performance of the Double Bass Concerto by Nino Rota with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1993.
