John Goss was a British composer and organist who lived from 27 December 1800 to 10 May 1880. He was born in Fareham, Hampshire, England, to a musical family. His father, John Goss Sr., was a musician and organist, and his mother, Sarah, was a singer. Goss showed an early interest in music and began playing the organ at the age of eight. Goss received his early education at the Winchester College, where he was a chorister. He later studied music under William Horsley, a prominent composer and organist of the time. Goss was a gifted musician, and he quickly made a name for himself as an organist and composer. In 1824, Goss was appointed as the organist at the Chapel Royal, St. James's Palace, London. This was a prestigious position, and it brought Goss into contact with some of the most important figures in British music at the time. He held this position for over 40 years, until his retirement in 1872. Goss was a prolific composer, and he wrote music in a variety of genres. He is best known for his church music, which includes anthems, hymns, and services. His most famous work is probably the hymn tune "Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven," which is still widely sung today. Goss's church music is characterized by its simplicity and elegance. In addition to his church music, Goss also wrote a number of secular works. He composed several operas, including "The Maid of Geneva" and "The Two Gentlemen of Verona." He also wrote a number of instrumental works, including sonatas for piano and organ. Goss was a respected figure in the British music scene, and he was involved in a number of musical organizations. He was a member of the Royal Society of Musicians, and he served as the president of the Royal Academy of Music from 1876 until his death in 1880.
