ItalyBirth:1690Death:after 1768Period:BaroqueGenre:ChamberPietro Baldassare was an Italian composer of the Baroque era, born in 1683 in the city of Naples. He was the son of a musician, and his father recognized his son's musical talent at an early age. Pietro began his musical education at the Conservatorio di Santa Maria di Loreto in Naples, where he studied under the tutelage of Francesco Provenzale, a prominent composer of the time. Baldassare's early works were influenced by the Neapolitan school of music, which was known for its dramatic and expressive style. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented composer, and his works were performed in churches and theaters throughout Naples. In 1705, he was appointed as the maestro di cappella at the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Naples, a position he held for several years. In 1710, Baldassare moved to Rome, where he continued to compose and perform his music. He quickly became a favorite of the Roman aristocracy, and his works were performed at many of the city's most prestigious venues. In 1714, he was appointed as the maestro di cappella at the church of San Giovanni in Laterano, one of the most important churches in Rome. Baldassare's music was characterized by its emotional intensity and virtuosic instrumental writing. He was particularly skilled at writing for the trumpet, and many of his works feature prominent trumpet parts. His music was also notable for its use of counterpoint and its complex harmonic structures. One of Baldassare's most famous works is his Sonata a 7 in D major, which was composed in 1715. This work is scored for seven instruments, including two trumpets, and features a lively and energetic opening movement followed by a slower, more contemplative second movement. The final movement is a lively dance in triple meter, showcasing Baldassare's skill at writing for multiple instruments. Another notable work by Baldassare is his Missa a 4, which was composed in 1720. This work is a setting of the Catholic Mass, and features four vocal parts accompanied by a small orchestra. The music is characterized by its rich harmonies and expressive melodies, and showcases Baldassare's skill at writing for both voices and instruments. Baldassare continued to compose and perform his music throughout his life, and his works remained popular long after his death in 1768. Today, he is remembered as one of the most important composers of the Baroque era, and his music continues to be performed and studied by musicians and scholars around the world.More....
