The Luxembourg Symphony Orchestra (OSL) is a classical music ensemble based in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg. The orchestra was founded in 2005 by conductor and pianist Bramwell Tovey, who served as its first music director until 2015. Since then, the orchestra has been led by conductor and violinist David Reiland. The OSL is composed of approximately 80 musicians from over 20 different countries, making it one of the most diverse orchestras in Europe. The ensemble performs a wide range of repertoire, from classical to contemporary music, and has collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors. One of the highlights of the OSL's early years was its debut performance at the Philharmonie Luxembourg in 2006, where it performed works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. The orchestra has since performed at many prestigious venues and festivals throughout Europe, including the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Philharmonie, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. In addition to its regular concert series, the OSL has also been involved in many special projects and collaborations. In 2010, the orchestra performed the world premiere of a new work by composer and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen, titled "Nyx," at the Philharmonie Luxembourg. The following year, the OSL collaborated with the Luxembourg-based dance company Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo for a production of Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring." The OSL has also been recognized for its recordings, receiving critical acclaim for its 2013 album of works by the Luxembourgish composer Laurent Menager. The album, titled "Luxembourg Music for Strings," was released on the Naxos label and features Menager's "Concerto for Strings," "Sinfonietta," and "Divertimento." In addition to its artistic achievements, the OSL has also been recognized for its commitment to education and outreach. The orchestra regularly participates in educational programs and workshops for young musicians, and has also collaborated with local schools and community organizations to bring classical music to a wider audience. Overall, the Luxembourg Symphony Orchestra has established itself as one of the leading classical music ensembles in Europe, known for its diverse repertoire, innovative programming, and commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement. With its talented musicians and visionary leadership, the OSL is sure to continue making a significant impact on the world of classical music for years to come.
