Frederick Riddle was a renowned classical music artist who made significant contributions to the world of music as a violist, conductor, and teacher. Born on August 31, 1912, in London, England, Riddle showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of six. However, he later switched to the viola, which became his primary instrument. Riddle received his formal music education at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under Lionel Tertis, a renowned violist of the time. He graduated with honors in 1932 and went on to become a member of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, where he played the viola for several years. In 1939, Riddle joined the BBC Symphony Orchestra, where he played under the direction of Sir Adrian Boult. During his time with the orchestra, Riddle gained a reputation as one of the finest violists of his generation. He also began to develop his skills as a conductor, and in 1946, he was appointed as the conductor of the BBC Scottish Orchestra. Riddle's career as a conductor took off in the 1950s, and he went on to conduct many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He was also a regular guest conductor at the Edinburgh Festival and the Proms. One of Riddle's most significant achievements as a conductor was his work with the Scottish National Orchestra. He was appointed as the orchestra's principal conductor in 1959 and held the position for ten years. During his tenure, Riddle transformed the orchestra into one of the finest in the world, and he was widely credited with raising the profile of classical music in Scotland. Riddle was also a highly respected teacher, and he taught at several prestigious music schools, including the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in music, and he was widely regarded as one of the most influential music teachers of his time. Throughout his career, Riddle received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music. In 1960, he was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) for his services to music, and in 1972, he was awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire). He was also awarded honorary doctorates from several universities, including the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh. Riddle's legacy as a musician and conductor continues to be felt today, and his recordings are still highly regarded by music lovers around the world. He died on December 8, 2001, at the age of 89, but his contributions to the world of classical music will always be remembered.
