Thomas-Mifune began his musical education at the age of six, studying piano and violin. He showed exceptional talent and was soon performing in public. At the age of ten, he made his debut as a soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. In 1950, Thomas-Mifune's family moved to Japan, where he continued his musical education. He studied at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he focused on piano performance. He also studied composition and conducting, and he became proficient in both. Thomas-Mifune's career as a concert pianist took off in the 1960s.
