Artist Info
The Danish String Quartet is a classical music ensemble that has gained international recognition for their unique sound and innovative approach to traditional repertoire. The quartet was founded in 2002 in Copenhagen, Denmark, by four young musicians who had a shared passion for chamber music. The founding members of the Danish String Quartet are violinists Frederik Øland and Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen, violist Asbjørn Nørgaard, and cellist Fredrik Schøyen Sjölin. All four musicians had studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and had already established themselves as soloists and chamber musicians before coming together to form the quartet. From the beginning, the Danish String Quartet was committed to exploring the full range of the string quartet repertoire, from the classical works of Haydn and Mozart to contemporary compositions by living composers. They quickly gained a reputation for their technical precision, musical sensitivity, and ability to bring fresh insights to even the most familiar works. One of the early highlights of the Danish String Quartet's career was their victory in the 2004 London International String Quartet Competition. This prestigious competition, which has launched the careers of many of the world's leading string quartets, was a major boost to the quartet's international profile. Since then, the Danish String Quartet has gone on to perform at many of the world's leading concert halls and music festivals, including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Edinburgh International Festival. They have collaborated with a wide range of musicians, from pianist Menahem Pressler to folk singer Poul Krebs. One of the hallmarks of the Danish String Quartet's approach to music-making is their commitment to exploring the connections between different musical traditions. They have collaborated with folk musicians from Denmark and other countries, incorporating elements of traditional music into their performances of classical repertoire. This has led to a number of innovative projects, such as their 2017 album "Last Leaf," which features arrangements of Nordic folk tunes alongside works by Bach and Beethoven. In addition to their performances, the Danish String Quartet is also committed to music education and outreach. They have worked with young musicians in Denmark and around the world, leading masterclasses and workshops and mentoring the next generation of chamber musicians. The Danish String Quartet has received numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In addition to their victory at the London International String Quartet Competition, they have been awarded the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, the Carl Nielsen Prize, and the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant. Despite their many achievements, the members of the Danish String Quartet remain committed to their ongoing musical exploration and growth. They continue to push the boundaries of the string quartet repertoire, seeking out new works and collaborations that challenge and inspire them. Their dedication to their craft and their passion for music-making have made them one of the most exciting and innovative chamber ensembles of our time.More....
