The founding members of the Britten String Quartet were violinists Ralph Holmes and Rodney Friend, violist Roger Tapping, and cellist Keith Harvey. All four musicians were accomplished soloists and had previously played together in various orchestras and ensembles. They named their quartet after the famous British composer Benjamin Britten, whose music they frequently performed. From the beginning, the Britten String Quartet was known for their exceptional musicianship and their ability to bring out the nuances and complexities of the music they played. They quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest string quartets in the world and were invited to perform at major music festivals and concert halls around the globe. One of the highlights of the Britten String Quartet's early career was their performance at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1973. They received critical acclaim for their interpretation of Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 131, which was described as "a performance of rare intensity and beauty." Over the years, the Britten String Quartet has performed a wide range of repertoire, from the classical works of Haydn and Mozart to the contemporary compositions of Britten and Shostakovich. They have also collaborated with many renowned musicians, including pianist Alfred Brendel and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Sadly, the Britten String Quartet's original members have all passed away. Ralph Holmes died in 1984, Keith Harvey in 1998, and Rodney Friend in 2020. Roger Tapping is the only surviving member of the original quartet. Despite the loss of their founding members, the Britten String Quartet continues to perform and record. They have welcomed new members into the ensemble, including violinist Mark Messenger and cellist Richard Jenkinson. The quartet remains committed to their mission of bringing the beauty and complexity of chamber music to audiences around the world.
