Rosanna Carteri was an Italian soprano who was born on December 14, 1930, in Verona, Italy. She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Her father, Giuseppe, was a violinist and her mother, Maria, was a pianist. Carteri showed an early interest in music and began singing at a young age. Carteri's talent was recognized early on, and she began studying voice at the age of 14 with the renowned Italian soprano Carmen Melis. She made her debut in 1948 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Italy, in the role of Micaela in Georges Bizet's opera Carmen. Her performance was well-received, and she quickly became a rising star in the world of opera. Over the next few years, Carteri performed in a number of major opera houses throughout Europe, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Vienna State Opera, and the Paris Opera. She also made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in 1953, in the role of Mimi in Giacomo Puccini's opera La Bohème. Carteri's voice was known for its clarity, purity, and beauty. She was particularly renowned for her performances of Mozart's operas, and she was often compared to the legendary soprano Maria Callas. Carteri's repertoire also included works by Verdi, Puccini, and other composers. One of Carteri's most memorable performances was in the role of Susanna in Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro. She performed the role at the Salzburg Festival in 1951, and her performance was widely praised. She also performed the role at the Metropolitan Opera in 1954, in a production that was broadcast live on television. Carteri received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1952, she was awarded the prestigious Viotti d'Oro prize for her performance in the role of Gilda in Verdi's opera Rigoletto. She was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1955. Despite her success, Carteri's career was relatively short-lived. She retired from the stage in 1965, at the age of 35. She later explained that she had grown tired of the demands of the opera world and wanted to focus on her family. After retiring from the stage, Carteri continued to teach voice and mentor young singers. She also made occasional appearances on television and in concert. In 1990, she was awarded the title of "Commendatore" by the Italian government for her contributions to the arts. Carteri passed away on October 25, 2018, at the age of 87. She was remembered as one of the greatest sopranos of her generation, and her recordings continue to be admired by opera lovers around the world.
