Anna Maria Canali was born on October 22, 1955, in Bologna, Italy. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her father being a violinist and her mother a pianist. From a young age, Canali showed a natural talent for music and began studying the piano at the age of six. Canali's musical education continued at the Conservatory of Bologna, where she studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and teacher, Franco Scala. She graduated with honors in 1975 and went on to further her studies at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, where she studied with Maria Tipo. In 1977, Canali won first prize at the prestigious Busoni International Piano Competition in Bolzano, Italy. This marked the beginning of her international career as a concert pianist. She went on to perform in major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Canali's repertoire was vast and included works by classical composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin, as well as contemporary composers such as Luciano Berio and György Ligeti. She was known for her technical precision and expressive interpretations, which earned her critical acclaim and a loyal following of fans. Throughout her career, Canali collaborated with many renowned conductors and orchestras, including Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, and the Berlin Philharmonic. She also performed with chamber music ensembles, such as the Trio di Trieste and the Quartetto Italiano. In addition to her concert career, Canali was also a respected teacher. She taught at the Conservatory of Bologna and the Accademia Chigiana, where she had studied as a student. Her students included many successful pianists, such as Andrea Lucchesini and Roberto Plano. Canali's recordings were also highly regarded. She recorded for major labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, Philips, and EMI, and her recordings of Chopin's complete works for piano were particularly acclaimed. Despite her success, Canali remained humble and dedicated to her craft. She continued to practice for hours each day and was known for her meticulous attention to detail. She once said, "The piano is a demanding instrument, and it requires a lot of work. But when you love something, you don't mind the work." Tragically, Canali's career was cut short when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2005. She continued to perform and teach for as long as she was able, but she passed away on December 30, 2009, at the age of 54. Canali's legacy lives on through her recordings and the many pianists she taught. She was a true artist who dedicated her life to music, and her contributions to the world of classical music will not be forgotten.
