He was born on August 2, 1905, in Vienna, Austria. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Schwarz showed a keen interest in music and began studying the piano and violin. Schwarz attended the Vienna Academy of Music, where he studied composition and conducting. He also studied with some of the most prominent musicians of his time, including Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. After completing his studies, Schwarz began his career as a conductor, working with various orchestras in Austria and Germany. In 1933, Schwarz was appointed as the conductor of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. He held this position for several years, during which time he gained a reputation as a skilled and innovative conductor. In 1938, Schwarz was forced to flee Austria due to the Nazi occupation. He moved to England, where he continued his career as a conductor. In England, Schwarz worked with several orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He also became the conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in 1943, a position he held for over a decade. During his time with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Schwarz gained a reputation as a conductor who was able to bring out the best in his musicians. Schwarz was also a prolific composer, and his works were performed by many orchestras around the world. His compositions were often influenced by his experiences as a conductor, and he was known for his ability to create music that was both challenging and accessible. One of Schwarz's most notable performances was his conducting of the premiere of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem in 1962.
