Born on 16th May 1954 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Kooy grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a church organist, and his mother was a singer. Kooy's parents recognized his musical talent at an early age and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Kooy began his musical training at the Rotterdam Conservatory, where he studied voice with Jan Veth and Max van Egmond. He later continued his studies at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, where he studied with Charles van Tassel. During his studies, Kooy developed a deep passion for early music, particularly the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Kooy's career as a professional musician began in the early 1980s when he joined the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, led by the renowned conductor and harpsichordist, Ton Koopman. With the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Kooy performed in numerous concerts and recordings, including Bach's St. Matthew Passion, St. John Passion, and Mass in B Minor. In addition to his work with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Kooy has collaborated with many other leading orchestras and conductors, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Academy of Ancient Music, and the English Baroque Soloists.
