Frédéric Chopin's 'Mazurkas (4) for piano, Op. 17' is a set of four mazurkas composed in 1832-1833. The set was dedicated to his friend and fellow composer Julian Fontana. The mazurka is a traditional Polish dance in triple meter, and Chopin's mazurkas are known for their unique blend of Polish folk music and classical music. The first mazurka in the set, in B-flat major, is marked Vivace and has a lively and playful character. The second mazurka, in E minor, is marked Lento, and has a more melancholic and introspective character. The third mazurka, in A-flat major, is marked Moderato, and has a more lyrical and romantic character. The final mazurka, in A minor, is marked Lento and has a more somber and introspective character. Chopin's mazurkas are known for their intricate rhythms, colorful harmonies, and expressive melodies. They often feature unexpected shifts in meter and key, as well as virtuosic flourishes and ornamentation. Chopin's use of rubato, or the flexible manipulation of tempo, is also a hallmark of his mazurkas. The 'Mazurkas (4) for piano, Op. 17' premiered in Paris in 1833, with Chopin himself performing. The set quickly became popular among both audiences and fellow composers, and helped establish Chopin's reputation as a leading figure in the Romantic era of classical music. Today, the 'Mazurkas (4) for piano, Op. 17' remain a beloved and frequently performed set of works in the piano repertoire.
