Samson François was a French classical pianist who was born on May 18, 1924, in Frankfurt, Germany. He was the son of a French mother and a Russian father who was a violinist. François began playing the piano at the age of three and showed exceptional talent from an early age. His family moved to Paris when he was six years old, and he continued his musical education there. François studied at the Paris Conservatory with Yves Nat, a renowned French pianist, and won first prize in piano at the age of 16. He made his debut at the Salle Pleyel in Paris in 1943, playing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4. This performance was a great success and marked the beginning of François's career as a concert pianist. Throughout his career, François was known for his virtuosic technique and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly admired for his interpretations of the works of Chopin, Debussy, and Ravel. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by composers such as Olivier Messiaen and Darius Milhaud. One of François's most notable performances was his 1959 recording of Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major with the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, conducted by André Cluytens. This recording is considered one of the definitive interpretations of the concerto and helped to establish François's reputation as one of the greatest pianists of his time. François also had a successful career as a soloist, performing with orchestras around the world. He made his debut in the United States in 1956, playing with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Dimitri Mitropoulos. He also performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra, among others. In addition to his performances, François was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Paris Conservatory from 1966 to 1983 and had many notable students, including Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Hélène Grimaud. Throughout his career, François received many awards and honors. He was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1967 and was promoted to Officier in 1985. He also received the Grand Prix du Disque for his recordings of Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major and Gaspard de la nuit. Despite his success, François struggled with personal demons throughout his life. He was known for his erratic behavior and his struggles with alcoholism. He died on October 22, 1970, at the age of 46, from a heart attack brought on by his alcoholism. Despite his short life, Samson François left a lasting legacy as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. His recordings continue to be admired for their technical brilliance and emotional depth, and his influence can be heard in the playing of many pianists today.
